The Dance of the Honeybee
Lets make this personal
Honeybees dance to communicate. When a bee discovers a food source, she returns to the hive to share that information with the colony. In the excitement of the dance, the fragrance of the flower is dispersed, and even the taste experience is shared. She then performs her remarkable “waggle dance,” communicating direction, distance, and location—nature’s own GPS system.
For the beekeeper, the dance begins with hive placement. Promise Land Apiaries carefully places its bees where exposure to pesticides is minimized and access to clean water and abundant flowers is maximized. From there, the work requires the beekeeper to be intimately involved in the wellbeing of the hive. This is where art and science intersect.
The science is found in observing hive growth, bee behavior, and the surrounding environment. The art is intuitive—it cannot always be taught, but it can be caught through experience, patience, and relationship with the bees.
We place particular attention on quality control in the selection and cultivation of bee stock uniquely adapted to Long Island conditions. Approximately 80% of Promise Land Apiaries’ bee stock is locally grown and bred on Long Island, making it custom-tailored for this environment.
Think of it as supporting a built-in immune system—specific to the challenges and rhythms of this region. The remaining stock is carefully introduced from diverse regions around the world to maintain strong genetic diversity, helping ensure the health, resilience, and vitality of the bees at Promise Land Apiaries.
